After half a year's preparation for the apartment gallery - Fou Gallery, we are pleased to announce the return of UNTITLEDdialogue project. On January 17th, 2014 (Friday 19:00-21:00), the 13th UNTITLEDdialogue will invite artist Li Mu to talk about Qiuzhuang Project - a dispersed art museum project in his home village, Qiuzhuang, with the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. Li Mu will introduce the project from the perspective of human relations, talking about some villagers' encounter with art and their reaction. It will be followed by a dialogue between Li Mu and Ellen Zweig, writer, film-maker and a recent visitor to Qiuzhuang Project.
UNTITLEDdialogue was born because of a dialogue with Li Mu on the rooftop of ISCP residency during his stay in New York in 2012. As a guest speaker at 1st UNTITLEDdialogue, Li Mu introduced his previous programs and a hatching project - Qiuzhuang Project. Over the last year, Li Mu has been developing this project with Van Abbemuseum's contemporary art collection in his home, Qiuzhuang, a small village in Jiangsu Province of about 1,000 people, approximately 800 kilometers south of Beijing. Li Mu and the Van Abbemuseum first came into contact during the Shanghai World Expo when Li Mu was part of the Eindhoven=Shanghai exchange project Double Infinity. Since then, the artist has been involved with the museum and visited Eindhoven in 2011. After that visit, Mu proposed bringing works of the museum's collection to the people of Qiuzhuang. The idea slowly developed and then the difficulties of transport and insurance were clear, the museum and the artist agreed to investigate making copies of certain collection works and displaying the copies around the village. Copies of Sol LeWitt's Untitled (Wall Structure), 1972 were hung up in the village and taken away by villagers to decorate their home. Videos of Ulay and Abramovic were displayed in a grocery store. Mu also invite villagers to create copies of works by Dan Flavin, Richard Long, Andy Warhol, Daniel Buren and Carl Andre.
The project also includes A Library, an independent institution in Qiuzhuang with no company or government affiliation. Li Mu hopes A Library will serve as a tool for education within the community and add to its cultural landscape. It is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.
